Kibale National Park
Location: In the west, near the foothills o the Mountains of the Moon
Size: 776 sq km
Status: National Park since 1993
Habitat:
Tropical forest, home to a host of forest wildlife,
Various vegetation zones including mature, mid-altitude, moist semi-deciduous and evergreen forest (57%), grassland (15%), woodland (4%), lakes and wetlands (2%), colonizing forest (19%), and plantations of exotic trees (1%) ; primarily Cupressus lusitanica, Pinus patula, P. caribaea, and Eucalyptus species.
Major attractions:
Chimpanzees and other primates including localised red colobus and L'Hoest's monkeys.
Other attractions:
Forest elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog and a half dozen antelope species, 300+ species of birds and varieties of plants.
GETTING THERE:
By Road: 6-7 hours drive to Fort Portal on a tarmac road (320km from Kampala – Uganda’s Capital City) or an hour's drive from Kasese (near Queen Elizabeth National Park). Kanyanchu Visitors Centre, 35km from Fort Portal, is reached on a murram road.
Safari activities
- The park’s main activity - Chimpanzee tracking is an enthralling experience enriched by watching these human closest apes, other primates and mammals, varieties of bird species and plants in their natural surroundings.
- Nature walks through the Bigodi swamp where a number of birds can be seen on the trail and in conservation projects.
- Community visits to the neighbouring local villages.
